IM Site Visit Reflection

For my site visit, Dr. Beckerman was my site evaluator. I also had my site visits with Talia, who was in her Emergency Medicine rotation. It was my first time having a site visit with a classmate who was not in the same rotation as me. Since my next rotation is Emergency Medicine, I enjoyed getting a “sneak peak” by hearing about the rotation, hearing about some cases she dealt with, and going through pharm cards about drugs that come up often in Emergency Medicine.

For my first site visit, I presented a patient with suspected CHF exacerbation, and a young patient who came in with hypertensive emergency and vision loss. I thought it was a good balance of a case that is very common and seen a lot in internal medicine, and a unique and interesting case that is not really seen or dealt with so often. Dr. Beckerman gave me great feedback which was very helpful.

For my second site visit, I presented a patient who came in after a brief loss of consciousness. LOC has a very long differential, so it was a great learning experience to go through all the necessary testing to do and labs to order to rule in or out different diagnoses. She also has myalgias all over, claiming that it was from her statin, which she stopped taking due to this. Thus, for my article, I researched alternative therapies to statins in treating HLD.

I also presented pharm cards of drugs commonly seen in internal medicine, and explained important facts about them.

Overall, I had great site visits, and was able to learn a lot from my research, from the other student, and from Dr. Beckerman’s comments and constructive feedback!
