Site Visit Reflection

For my pediatric rotation, I had 2 virtual site visits with Professor Maida, along with my 3 classmates who were also in their pediatric rotation. For our first site visit, we each presented one H&P as well as got quizzed on each others pharm cards. For our second site visit, we each presented a second H&P as well as an article relating to that patient, and got quizzed on each other’s pharm cards again.

For my first visit, I presented a 2 week old patient with projectile vomiting. I found it challenging to present on such a young baby, since the H&P looks quite different than that of an adult. Professor Maida gave me feedback on important information to include when discussing newborns, such as mentioning fontanelles and whether the red reflex is intact. For my second visit, I presented a 4 year old boy with croup, and discussed an article about croup as a manifestation of Covid-19.

Since I am rotating at an outpatient office where we mostly see very basic cases, it was nice to hear from my peers who were rotating at other places, especially in the hospital, about unique cases they saw. I was able to learn a lot from my classmates, and hear about and discuss a wide variety of issues that could occur in the pediatric setting.

I also liked the way we were quizzed on the pharm cards, because it helped me remember the details of the various drugs better. Furthermore, since 2 of the students rotated in pediatric specialties, they had some drugs that were very specific and even one or two I had never heard of, so it was nice to learn about new drugs, as well as learn more details about drugs I was less familiar with.

Overall, I think we had a great group for these site visits and I was able to learn a lot with and from my classmates as well as from Professor Maida through these visits.
